INGECID carried out the definition of an Element Classification System (ECS) for the BIM models of the Spanish State road network, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA). This project represents a key step toward digitalizing asset management in road infrastructure and contributed to the development of the RCEClass BIM classification system, recently released.
We conducted an analysis of the current state of infrastructure management databases to identify asset hierarchies. Existing BIM classification systems were reviewed, and an initial proposal was developed to establish a precise and standardized terminology, including key concepts, definitions, synonyms, and the corresponding scope for each term. Additionally, the classification system was structured, and several pilot cases with BIM models were tested to enhance interoperability and align it with international standards.
This work represents a major milestone in modernizing linear infrastructure management, enabling more efficient, structured, and digitalized public asset management.
