The Council of Ministers authorized the manufacture of 44 new spent nuclear fuel containers incorporating INGECID's MAB (Auxiliary Shielding Module) patent. This patent, transferred to Ensa, made it possible to reduce nuclear radiation in the containers, enabling the storage of the entire fuel inventory in the Individualized Temporary Storage Facility (ATI) at the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant.
The contract, one of two authorized for the manufacture and supply of containers for the Almaraz (Cáceres), Trillo (Guadalajara), and Santa María de Garoña (Burgos) power plants, had a five-year execution period. ENRESA awarded Ensa the contract for the manufacture and supply of the containers for Garoña, currently in permanent shutdown, for an estimated value of €127.6 million, including the corresponding MABs, with the aim of having the first units ready in 2023.
This project consolidated INGECID's technological contribution to the nuclear sector, highlighting the importance of innovation applied to safe and efficient spent nuclear fuel storage solutions.
