The aim of the project was to develop a complete NPPIM (Nuclear Power Plant Information Modeling: BIM applied to nuclear power plants) model of the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant, with the aim of supporting all activities involved in the decommissioning process.
To this end, the power plant buildings and the various piping systems included in each of the buildings were modeled. Each element of the model was provided with a high level of information that proved useful in each phase of the decommissioning preparation process, beginning with the physical inventory and radiological characterization.
The use of the model made it possible to identify potential interference between elements, the volumes and characteristics of each material, access routes to different areas, and the availability of storage space at each stage of the project. This enabled optimized planning of dismantling activities, as well as efficient management of waste, resources, and storage space, cost monitoring, and component traceability.
