Laura González Suárez, a member of the INGECID Projects department, has led research into concrete reinforced with metal fibers, culminating in the publication of two articles in scientific journals and three presentations at the ACHE 2022 congress, held in Santander.

The main purpose of the research is to improve the design of wind towers with fibers, port caissons and other features to improve processes and reduce costs that INGECID is currently working on.

The first of the articles published, produced in association with LADICIM (University of Cantabria) and entitled 'Effect of Steel Fibre Reinforcement on Flexural Fatigue Behaviour of Notched Structural Concrete', concludes that the presence of fibers reduces the effects of fatigue when concrete is cracked.

The study applied two criteria, namely energy and notch growth, to determine critical energy values that can be used as predictive indicators of the collapse of the element.

Effect of fiber reinforcement on creep in concrete

The second research project in which INGECID has participated, together with the University of Cantabria, entitled ‘Effect of Fibre Reinforcement on Creep in Early Age Concrete', studied the strain behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) in the event of a creep episode. The authors propose a formulation for the evaluation of the delayed elastic strain undergone by FRC after a creep episode.

The study concluded that FRC loaded at an earlier age stiffens after a creep episode, confirming that it undergoes less deformation than concrete loaded at a later stage.

INGECID at the 8th Triennial Congress of the Spanish Association of Structural Engineering (e-ACHE)

Some of the results and conclusions obtained from these and other studies carried out on fiber-reinforced concrete were presented by INGECID at the 8th Triennial Congress of the Spanish Association of Structural Engineering (e-ACHE).

Laura González Suárez, engineer at INGECID, gave three presentations in the research and development category:

  • Influence of the concreting method on the distribution of metallic macrofibers in vibrated concrete.
  • Effect of steel fiber reinforcement on the development of flexural fatigue in structural concretes.
  • Development of flexural strength in fiber-reinforced concretes

The Spanish Association of Structural Engineering is a non-profit organization that fosters progress in structural concrete and in the field of civil engineering structures and building in general.

This is a key congress in the world of structural engineering, with top-level national and international speakers, including the aforementioned presentations by INGECID. At the 2022 edition we were able to learn about the latest advances, reports and analyses in the structural field, the Congress once again proving its vital importance in the building and civil and industrial engineering calendar, with more than 400 attendees registered.
