INGECID participated in a review meeting on the Innovation Plan for Road Infrastructures, organized by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia’s Department of Regional Infrastructure and Development.

The session gave INGECID the opportunity to share its innovative experiences in the application of BIM methodology, in particular how the use of BIM speeded up the development of Bilbao's Southern Metropolitan Bypass (VSM).

BIM, a collaborative and enabling methodology

Jesús de Paz Sierra, Director of the Design Engineering and BIM Department at INGECID, explained how the use of this methodology made the teams more efficient, speeding up both the workflow and decision-making throughout the project, thanks to its impact on three key areas:

  • People
  • Processes
  • Technologies

To this end, the use of the Vircore CDE (Common Data Environment), a comprehensive project management platform developed by INGECID, has been key.

In the case of the Bilbao Bypass, every participant in the project had fast, flexible access to the 40,000 documents and 200 Gb of information available via the platform.

This ensured that sections 9A and 9B of Phase I were executed with constant, fluid communication between all the parties involved, the development of three-dimensional BIM modeling tasks and 4D time planning being an essential part of the process.

Advantages of VIRCORE in the development of the project

The Vircore platform has played a fundamental role in maintaining all information and management in a single interface, allowing collaborative integrated document management within the BIM model.

Every action is completely traceable, a key consideration in large projects involving multiple agents such as the Southern Bypass.

The ability to track different versions and progress made, without the previous information being lost, and the ease of defining profiles with different authorizations to access documentation are among the benefits Vircore brought to the project.

About the meeting

The day was organized by Bilbao Metropoli-30 and consisted of two sessions:

The first was presented by the Aclima – Basque Environment Cluster, Eraikune – Basque Construction Cluster and Mobility and Logistics Cluster, and MLC ITS Euskadi, who were the driving forces behind the plan's working groups.

In the second it was the turn of INGECID, presenting the development of specific projects. De Diego and Ingeniería FULCRUM also participated in this session.
