STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

FLEXIBILITY AND TAILORED ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS

At INGECID, we specialize in the design and analysis of structures, including systems and components, covering the entire process—from preliminary or conceptual design and alternative evaluations to detailed design and fabrication or construction documentation—across nuclear, wind, civil, and industrial sectors.

We have the experience and capabilities to perform advanced analyses using a variety of specialized software applications, fully compliant with applicable national and international standards.

ADVANCED STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE MOST DEMANDING SECTORS

At INGECID, we design a wide range of structures, systems, and components, leveraging our team’s extensive experience in advanced finite element simulations and the application of national and international codes as required by each project. Results from specialized analyses—including geotechnical, seismic, and thermal studies—are integrated into a single, optimized structural design. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures adaptability to each client’s specific requirements. Solutions range from pressure vessels (heaters, exchangers), tooling and auxiliary equipment for heavy load handling, spent nuclear fuel or radioactive waste storage and transport systems, to foundations, wind turbine towers, and building structures.

We perform seismic analyses, including determining ground dynamic properties using software such as SHAKE or P-CARES, and developing advanced models in LS-DYNA or SASSI to account for soil-structure interaction and calculate seismic-induced stresses. These detailed analyses are often required in the nuclear sector, where we have extensive experience.

We conduct thermal simulations and analyses using finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD), depending on project requirements. Temperature distributions and thermal loads are calculated to support the design of various components or structures, particularly in the nuclear sector.

We perform advanced dynamic simulations using LS-DYNA to model impacts, primarily in accidental scenarios, such as vessel collisions with offshore wind turbine jacket foundations or drops during the storage or transport of spent nuclear fuel containers.

We carry out inspections of in-service civil structures, including concrete and steel foundations, assessing their condition and identifying any measures required for rehabilitation when necessary.

We develop innovative solutions for the storage and transport of spent fuel and other radioactive waste. Our multidisciplinary teams analyze challenges and deliver tailored solutions, often resulting in new patents. Structural analysis includes impact simulations for accidental drops and assessments considering operational loads such as thermal effects or seismic events during storage.

PRECISION, EFFICIENCY, AND SAFETY IN EVERY PROJECT WE UNDERTAKE

ESKOM awarded the KCC (Koeberg Civils Consortium), formed by INGECID's subsidiary in South Africa and local construction company WBHO Construction, the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract for the design and construction of a new spent fuel container storage facility at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant.

The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has approved the request for authorization to build and assemble the Individualized Temporary Storage Facility (ATI) at the Vandellòs II Nuclear Power Plant in Tarragona. This authorization allows excavation and construction to begin on the structures needed for the new dry storage facility, located within the protected area of the plant and with capacity to hold up to 73 HI-STORM FW model containers, currently in the licensing process. The commissioning of the ISF is essential, as the fuel pool at Vandellòs II will reach its maximum capacity during the refueling scheduled for April 2027.

This contract covered the design and calculation of several railway structures: Murtal Viaduct, embankment reinforcement with piled foundations, Mascarat Road overpass, Río Torres Viaduct, and a service road crossing. We performed calculations and sizing for all structural elements, and prepared detailed drawings, measurements, cost estimates, and project execution plans (PPTP) for each structure.

INGECID participates in the expansion and refurbishment of the Muskiz Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), a project awarded by the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium (CABB) to ACCIONA. The project includes a new biological treatment system, pretreatment facilities, tertiary treatment with filtration and disinfection, stormwater management, and sludge disposal, dewatering, and storage facilities. We provide structural calculations and design support for all new structures.

ENRESA has awarded INGECID the contract for “Type B packaging design services for the transport of radioactive material,” following a tender process in which the company submitted the best technical and economic bid according to the weighting of the established criteria. This project strengthens INGECID's collaboration with ENRESA in the field of nuclear engineering and the safe management of radioactive material transport.

INGECID has supervised the characterization of structures and outdoor areas at the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant. These activities include sampling different surfaces and areas—soil, smears, water, scarified areas, among others—for laboratory analysis, as well as conducting on-site measurements of surface contamination, gamma spectrometry, and radiological scans. The results obtained are stored in the VIRCORE database, linked to the NPPIM (Nuclear Power Plant Information Modeling) model, which allows the condition of the external areas to be characterized and the radiological background of the facility to be established.
