INGECID is participating alongside NTT DATA and ISASTUR in an ambitious digital transformation project for Iberdrola Distribución Eléctrica (i-DE) with the aim of digitizing and automating the design and construction processes for electrical substations and very high voltage lines to improve efficiency and quality.
The project focuses on the implementation of BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, a key methodology that seeks to digitize processes, improve efficiency, reduce errors, and ensure data traceability throughout the entire asset lifecycle.
A digitization challenge in the electricity sector
Traditionally, the design and construction of electrical infrastructure was carried out using tools that were poorly integrated and heavily dependent on manual processes.
This led to fragmentation of information, loss of traceability, and longer execution times. The challenge was therefore:
• Digitize fragmented processes.
• Improve collaboration between internal and external teams.
• Reduce errors and time thanks to 3D modeling and automation.
• Align electrical engineering with BIM methodologies already established in other sectors.
A comprehensive BIM-based solution
The solution designed and implemented combines technology, processes, and team training. Among the most notable milestones are:
• Configuration of a common data environment (CDE) for collaborative information management.
• Automation of technical tasks through programming.
• Development of a customized BIM catalog with more than 1,800 parametric objects adapted to customer standards.
• Integration of BIM models with corporate systems to ensure digital continuity.
• Training and change management, promoting BIM maturity throughout the organization.
Today, the project is already showing significant results in:
• Reduction in time spent on repetitive tasks.
• Improved design quality and accuracy.
• More seamless collaboration between engineering firms, contractors, and internal teams.

With this project, i-DE is taking a decisive step towards the digitization of its engineering and construction processes, positioning itself as a leader in the adoption of BIM methodologies in the electricity sector and opening the door to operation and maintenance management using BIM methodology.
