INGECID has supervised the characterization of structures and outdoor areas at the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant. These activities include sampling different surfaces and areas—soil, smears, water, scarified areas, among others—for laboratory analysis, as well as conducting on-site measurements of surface contamination, gamma spectrometry, and radiological scans. The results obtained are stored in the VIRCORE database, linked to the NPPIM (Nuclear Power Plant Information Modeling) model, which allows the condition of the external areas to be characterized and the radiological background of the facility to be established.
The VIRCORE collaborative platform plays an essential role in this type of work by facilitating interaction between all project stakeholders in a common, secure digital environment. Its integration with the NPPIM model enables comprehensive information management, real-time coordination, and accurate identification of materials, routes, interferences, and available spaces. This methodology increases the efficiency and reliability of characterization tasks. INGECID thus consolidates its experience in the field, following its participation in 2019 in the characterization of the Turbine Building at the same plant, also supported by VIRCORE and the 3D NPPIM model.
