Last October, the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) ruled favorably on an application for authorization to execute and build an Individualized Temporary Storage facility at the Vandellòs II Nuclear Power Plant in Tarragona. This allows the plant operator to begin earthworks and the construction of the structures needed for this dry storage facility.

The facility will be located within the protected area of the plant and will have the capacity to store up to 73 HI-STORM FW casks, currently in the licensing process. This will be a key infrastructure as the Vandellòs II spent fuel pool will reach maximum capacity when the refueling operation scheduled for April 2027 is completed.

INGECID is proud to have played a part in this project, having developed the design of the storage area, as well as carrying out thermal, structural and seismic calculations on the facility’s structures.

This work is part of the ATI-100 project developed by the Holtec-Ensa joint venture for Enresa, which includes the design, licensing support, manufacture and supply of a spent nuclear fuel storage and transport system for the Ascó, Almaraz, Cofrentes and Vandellòs II nuclear plants.

INGECID confirms its commitment to engineering excellence and safety in the nuclear sector.
