Digitalization helps companies improve their competitiveness. Above all, it is useful in an environment replete with data, which are sometimes hard to use and understand if you do not have the right tools.

This need for transformation also affects the AEC (Architecture/Engineering/Construction) and nuclear sectors. This need is intensified by the boom in new processes like BIM methodology, defined by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs as "the heart of digital transformation" in these sectors.

This is no surprise given the EU’s strategic priorities for the business sector, which focus on making European companies leaders in the new, digital age to boost the competitiveness of the businesses in the Common European Framework.

INGECID in AEC and nuclear digitalization

Aligning the need for digitalization with the management and execution of engineering, architecture, construction, and nuclear projects is no easy task, given the number of agents involved.

To facilitate their work and the relationships between these agents, and to satisfy the growing need for digitalization and data processing, INGECID has developed a digital tool: VIRCORE, with the slogan "Simple management for complex projects". VIRCORE, con el lema «Gestión sencilla de proyectos complejos».

INGECID markets this collaborative platform, which facilitates communication between every agent involved in a project, regardless of their role and within a single interface. It fully complies, with the requirements of BIM methodology, and supports the needs set out in ISO 19650 (the international standard for managing information over the whole lifecycle of a built asset using said methodology).

Advantages of VIRCORE for the AEC and nuclear sectors

This application does much more than document management and model visualization, it covers the entire spectrum of projects:

  • Planning
  • Budget
  • 4D simulations
  • Certification
  • Maintenance, etc.

A collaborative platform linking all these to BIM models. It is what is known as a CDE (Common Data Environment) and can be adapted and expanded with great flexibility, depending on the sector in which it is to be applied and the needs identified.

VIRCORE success stories

VIRCORE software is currently being used in several pioneering projects in the industrial, nuclear, civil engineering and building fields. Notable examples include, Phase Ib of Bilbao's Southern Metropolitan Bypass and the project to develop a technological platform to manage the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Norway.

In the first case, VIRCORE has facilitated total multi-project management, with high safety standards, and all the participants can access the project, wherever they are. In short, VIRCORE has facilitated genuinely fluid and transparent collaboration between all parties, streamlining interaction and complying with the standards and objectives of BIM methodology.

In the nuclear field, apart from the Norwegian project, INGECID has also used VIRCORE in Spain in the decommissioning of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant.

The software was used to integrate a 3D model of the power plant, together with different modules for compiling the radiological inventory, cost control and traceability, planning, etc., optimizing the entire decommissioning process.
