INGECID's Auxiliary Shielding Module (ASM), the patent for which has been transferred to Ensa, helps to reduce nuclear radiation in spent fuel containers. It is part of one of the two new contracts which the Council of Ministers has authorized for the manufacture and supply of spent fuel casks for the nuclear power plants at Almaraz (Cáceres), Trillo (Guadalajara) and Santa María de Garoña (Burgos).

The patent, which makes it possible to store the entire fuel inventory in the Individualized Temporary Storage facility of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant, is key to carrying out the project, which is to be completed within 5 years.

ENRESA has awarded Ensa (Equipos Nucleares, S.A., S.M.E.) the contract for the manufacture and supply of casks for the Garoña Power Plant, which is currently not operational. With an estimated value of €127.6 million, it will involve the supply of 44 casks with their corresponding Auxiliary Shielding Modules, with the first units expected to be ready in 2023.
